Animal hides were frequently softened by a method called "brain tanning," which left the hide soft and pliable. The animal's own brain was slightly cooked in water and rubbed into the hide. The hide fibers were then worked and stretched with a blunt tool until dry. So-called buckskin, a favorite for making clothing, is brain-tanned deer hide.
